The Department of Economics started functioning in the college from 1964, when the college began its operations as a junior college. At that time, the subject had been taught only at the Pre – Degree level. From 1981, with the introduction of the B.A. Degree course in Political Science, the department started handling a subsidiary course in
Economics for the students of B.A. Political Science. With the separation of the Pre-Degree programme from colleges, it remained the only course for the department to manage. Currently the department is handling four complementary courses in Economics, distributed over the first four semesters of the First Degree Programme in Political Science.
