St. Gregorios College, Kottarakara which was founded in 1964 started functioning with only a few Departments and the Department of physical Education was one among them. The Department was first headed by Prof. K S Mathew (late) and then by Prof. K T Annamma. Today Prof. Thomas P George is the head of the Department. Mr. C. Lucose is serving as the sports marker of the Department.

From 1984 to 1994, the Department had a Sports Hostel for Volleyball (Women) sponsored by the Kerala State Sports Council. Throughout this period and after, the Department gifted the college with many outstanding players; Elsamma Mathew went on to become an international Junior Volleyball player and Sujamma K became the Women's individual champion at the South Zone All India Inter University Athletic Championship in 1992, to mention a few. The College also produced the renowned football player Kurikesh Mathew, captain of the Kerala State team which lifted the Santhosh Trophy in 1993 and the famous Cricket player Jagadeesh V A, the captain of the Kerala Renji Trophy Cricket team 2011. Now the College has various teams including the Volleyball team, Football team, Basketball team, Shuttle Badminton team, Cricket team, Athletic team, Ball Badminton (Men & Women) teams and Body Building team. Special attention is being given to promote Volleyball and Ball Badminton (Men & Women). In addition to various playing fields, the department has a full-fledged body building and fitness centre. In 2007 and 2008, Aneesh K of this College received the 'Mr. Kerala University' Award for best physique. Later he represented the University of Kerala in the All India Inter University Best Physique Competition and secured a creditable 7th position.
